Remembering Sir Geoffrey Bindman: A Champion for Justice and Human Rights
On November 4, I lost a dear friend–and the world lost an icon for human rights. Sir Geoffrey Bindman is known for his brilliance as a scholar and teacher as well as for fighting for the underserved and persecuted throughout his storied legal career.
Geoffrey and I started as colleagues working for the law school client counseling competition (www.brownmosten.com) for which he served as the founding President of the England/Wales competition. We met in 1981 when he invited himself for lunch at my storefront office to discuss my early days as a founding partner with Len Jacoby and Stephen Meyers as Geoffrey wanted to transport the private legal clinic concept to the UK.
My wife and I enjoyed sharing time with Geoffrey and his late wife Dr. Lynn Bindman in their Highgate flat when we visited London and our conversations about the future of the law and politics never seemed to reach conclusion. I hope to carry on our shared vision in some small way.
