Case Consultation and Study Group

Matthew Carroll, Mediator

As President of the Indiana Association of Mediators, I’ve had the privilege of learning from many skilled facilitators, but Woody Mosten has been a guiding light throughout my career. From his insightful book “Mediation Career Guide” which influenced me in becoming a mediator, to his recent masterclass at the Academy of Family Mediators’ Online Conference, Woody has consistently demonstrated his exceptional talents as an educator and mentor.

Woody’s approach to facilitation is truly transformative. He combines genuine curiosity, unwavering kindness, and a remarkable ability to create a safe environment for open dialogue. What sets him apart is his talent for encouraging self-reflection and providing a crucial outlet for mediators in a profession that can often feel isolating.

Mediation can be a lonely field, with many of us working as solo practitioners without regular opportunities to unpack difficult cases, discuss ethical dilemmas, or process emotional experiences. Woody’s non-judgmental approach allows participants to share anything, knowing it will be met with kindness and curiosity, rather than criticism.

The opportunity to participate in Woody’s Reflective Practice Group is a gift for our profession. It offers a much-needed space for self-care and professional development, allowing mediators to validate their choices, explore internal conflicts, and gain deeper insights into their practice.

I wholeheartedly recommend joining this group. It’s a chance to learn from one of the most gifted facilitators in mediation, be part of a supportive community, and engage in essential self-care. Don’t miss this opportunity to grow under the guidance of a true master who embodies the patience and understanding essential for meaningful development in our field!

The Mediation Study Club has been invaluable to me and my growth as a mediator. Special thanks to Woody for seeing the potential in me – way, way back – and inviting me to be a part of this group. I have learned so much from every member of this group.

As a recovering litigator, it is quite exciting to commence a new way of being and doing. I’ve been meditating for the past 5 years, but have straddled between both worlds. The old one just doesn’t fit anymore. It is comforting to have a group of supportive professionals around me while making this shift. The truth is that being vulnerable and waiting for things to gently shift are not typical ways of being for an employment and family litigator. It’s refreshing to know that after 20 plus years in the other world, I can grow and change. Like some of you, I have a successful law practice, which I enjoyed for many years. I love my clients and many of my colleagues. But I have grown past this, and I need to be true to myself and the universe! I look forward to your support. I need it – to turn down litigation clients and the $$$ to make space for this practice. If I don’t do that, there is not enough space in my calendar or my heart for what is next.
